A Big, Big World: Growing One Chirp at a Time

Post Categories

It was Saturday afternoon, and the farmhouse felt like a cozy haven from the cold outside.

Milo, our white Maltese, and Panda Bear, our black-and-white Shih Tzu, were stretched out on the couch beside me, soaking up the warmth from the crackling fire. I was working quietly on the computer, thinking about how fast these past ten days had gone by. Mohawk, Feisty, and Sunshine were already so much bigger than when they first arrived.

Then it started.

Cheep! Cheep! Cheep!

One of the chicks was chirping like crazy, louder than usual.

Panda Bear's ears shot up, and he jumped right off the couch to investigate. Milo hesitated for just a second, then thump, he hopped down too.

The chirping grew even louder.

I stood up right away. "Oh my," I said out loud. "What's going on in there?"

Feisty Finds Her Voice

And guess who I found standing right on top of the little heater?

Yep. Feisty.

I gently picked her up, and she looked all around with those wide, curious eyes, chirping up a storm as if she had so much to tell me about this big discovery.

I couldn't help but smile. This little one was living up to her name.

She flapped her tiny wings as fast as she could, like she was ready to fly off and explore the entire world right then and there.

"Oh no you don't," I laughed, holding her close. "You're still way too little."

But looking at her, I could see how much she'd already changed. Her soft yellow baby fuzz was giving way to beautiful black feathers spreading across her wings. She was growing so fast.

A Song for Growing Wings

I started singing softly to her, one of those spontaneous songs that just comes from the heart:

It's a big, big world out here,
It's a big, big world out here.
Just look and see,
There's so much to see out here.

Step by step and wing by wing,
You'll grow into amazing things.
Don't be scared, you're not alone,
Every day you're growing strong.

Flap your wings and chirp with glee,
The world is waiting patiently.

Feisty stretched out her little wings as I sang, as if she understood every word.

Sharing the Moment

I grabbed my phone to make a quick video for Aunt Jean, who's still down in Alabama and missing all these special chick moments back home.

As I recorded, I showed her how Feisty's wings were changing, those gorgeous black feathers coming in strong and proud. Feisty chirped and flapped the whole time, putting on quite the show.

"She's getting so big," I whispered into the video. "And look at those wings."

I sent it off with a smile, knowing Aunt Jean would love seeing Feisty growing, flapping, and discovering the world one chirp at a time.

And Feisty? She was right where she was meant to be, growing, changing, and learning just how big and beautiful the world really is.

A Note from Mama: Growing Takes Time

This moment with Feisty reminded me of something important.

Sometimes the world feels very big, especially when we're small, new, or just learning how to spread our wings.

Feisty didn't need to rush. She didn't need to know everything yet. She only needed to grow one day at a time, surrounded by warmth, care, and love.

We're a lot like that too, aren't we?

Step by step, and sometimes wing by wing, we grow into who we're meant to be. And even when the world feels overwhelming or too big to handle, we're never alone.

This moment made me think of a song I learned as a child, "He's Still Working on Me" by Joel Hemphill. It's a beautiful reminder that growing takes time, and we're all still becoming who we were created to be.

God isn't finished with us yet. Not with me, not with you, and certainly not with these precious little chicks.

The Beauty of Small Steps

Here at Faithful Flock Farm, we see this truth play out every single day.

Our chickens don't become egg-layers overnight. Our garden doesn't bloom in a day. And building this farm? Well, that's been a journey of faith, patience, and trust, one small step at a time.

We've learned to celebrate the little victories. The first egg. The first signs of spring. The first time a chick flaps its wings and realizes it was made for more.

Each moment matters. Each step forward counts.

A Little Note About This Story

Before we wrap up, we wanted to share something simple and sweet.

This little chick story and the reflection that goes with it are actually an excerpt from a book Amy is currently writing (her 6th or 7th book at this point!), titled "What we thought we lost."

It's still in the works. But these are the kinds of small, everyday moments that have been shaping it, one honest page at a time.

You're Not Alone in the Growing

Whether you're raising chickens, building a business, growing in your faith, or just trying to navigate this big, big world: remember Feisty's lesson.

You don't have to have it all figured out today.

You don't have to be fully grown yet.

You just have to keep showing up, keep trusting, and keep growing: one day, one step, one chirp at a time.

God is still working on you. And that's the most beautiful thing of all.

We'd love to hear from you! Have you experienced a moment lately where you felt God reminding you that He's still working on you? Share your story with us at our contact page or follow along with more farm updates and Tales of Faithful Flock Farm.

P.S. Our book "When God Plants a Farm" will be releasing on Amazon Valentine's weekend 2026. 🤍
