Sometimes the best farm decisions happen on a road trip.
This week, I'm heading down to Alabama to pick up Aunt Jean, and what started as a simple family trip turned into something much more exciting for Faithful Flock Farm. I found a hatchery along the route, and let's just say I couldn't resist the opportunity.
I'm bringing home a dozen hatching eggs.
Not chicks, eggs. Beautiful, possibility-filled, future-of-the-farm eggs.
The Hatchery Stop That Changed Everything
When I stumbled upon this hatchery while planning the route to Alabama, my heart did a little flip. They had exactly what I'd been dreaming about for our farm, a rainbow of breeds that would bring new colors, personalities, and yes, even more variety to our already beloved farm fresh eggs.

So I made the call. A dozen hatching eggs, please. One dozen chances at expanding our flock in the most beautiful way possible.
Here's what's coming home with me:
Seramas – These tiny treasures are the smallest chickens in the world. They're full of personality packed into a pint-sized package.
Brahmas – The gentle giants of the chicken world. These beauties are calm, friendly, and absolutely stunning with their feathered feet.
Rhode Island Reds – The classic backyard chicken. Dependable, friendly, and known for producing beautiful brown eggs.
Black/Blue Copper Marans – Oh, these are special. They lay those gorgeous dark chocolate-colored eggs that people go absolutely crazy for.
Vorwerks – A rare heritage breed with striking black and gold coloring. They're excellent foragers and wonderful layers.
Salmon Faverolles – With their fluffy cheeks and sweet disposition, these French beauties are going to steal hearts around here.
Easter Eggers – The artists of the egg basket. These are the ones that give us those stunning green eggs and blue eggs that always make people smile.
Australorps – Known for their incredible egg-laying abilities and jet-black feathers that shimmer green in the sunlight.
Each egg holds a little miracle waiting to happen.
The New Incubator Waiting at Home
I'll be honest: our current incubator is already working overtime. That's why we've ordered a bigger one.
When I get back from Alabama with Aunt Jean and our precious cargo of hatching eggs, that new incubator is going to be ready and waiting. The timing couldn't be more perfect.

A bigger incubator means more possibilities. It means we can hatch more of our own flock, preserve heritage breeds, and continue growing Faithful Flock Farm in a way that honors our commitment to raising chickens with care and intention.
The excitement I feel thinking about filling that incubator with these rainbow eggs? It's hard to put into words.
Faith in Every Shell
There's something deeply spiritual about the hatching process.
You place an egg in an incubator, maintain the right temperature and humidity, turn it faithfully, and then… you wait. You trust. You have faith that life is developing inside that shell, even though you can't see it.
It takes 21 days for a chicken egg to hatch. That's three weeks of careful tending, patient watching, and hopeful believing.

Some eggs will hatch. Some won't. That's the reality of farming: you do your best, you steward what you've been given, and you trust the outcome to something bigger than yourself.
But every pip, every crack, every fuzzy chick that emerges wet and wobbly into the world? Pure joy.
This is why we do what we do. This is why we're so passionate about our pasture raised eggs and the flock that produces them. Each generation is a gift, and we don't take that lightly.
What This Means for Our Egg Basket
Right now, our customers love the variety we already offer. Our current flock produces beautiful brown eggs, white eggs, and those special green eggs that are always the first to sell out.
But imagine this: dark chocolate Maran eggs. Cream-colored eggs from the Faverolles. Rich brown eggs from the Rhode Island Reds. The bluest blue eggs from Easter Eggers.
Our egg cartons are going to look like spring arrived early and decided to stay forever.

Each color tells a story about the hen who laid it. Each breed brings something unique to our farm: different personalities, different foraging styles, different ways of interacting with their environment.
We're not just expanding our flock. We're deepening our commitment to heritage breeds, sustainable farming, and providing our community with the highest quality, most beautiful farm fresh eggs possible.
Milo and Panda Bear Are Waiting
Back at the farm, our faithful dogs Milo and Panda Bear are holding down the fort.
They have no idea what's coming. When we arrive home with our precious cargo of hatching eggs, they'll probably sniff the air curiously, wondering what all the excitement is about.
But in a few weeks, when those eggs start hatching? When tiny peeps fill the brooder and new life arrives at Faithful Flock Farm? They'll understand. They always do.
Milo and Panda Bear have watched over many generations of chicks. They're the gentlest guardians we could ask for, and they take their job seriously. These new chicks will grow up under their watchful eyes, just like all the others.
The Journey Begins
This road trip to Alabama is about more than picking up Aunt Jean: though we're thrilled to have her coming home with us.
It's about possibilities. It's about growth. It's about taking faithful steps forward even when you can't see the full picture yet.
Those dozen eggs represent dozens of tomorrows at Faithful Flock Farm. They represent early mornings checking on chirping chicks, afternoons watching them explore their world for the first time, and eventually, the joy of collecting their very first eggs.

We're planning to document this entire journey. From the moment we place those eggs in the incubator to the day the first chick pips through its shell to the morning we collect their first eggs as adult hens.
We'd love for you to follow along with us. This is the kind of journey that reminds us why we farm: not just for the end product, but for the process itself. The miracle of life. The patience it requires. The faith it builds.
What's Next
Once we're back home and those eggs are safely tucked into the new incubator, the waiting begins.
We'll be sharing updates throughout the hatching process. We'll introduce you to each breed, talk about their unique characteristics, and celebrate every single chick that successfully hatches.
This is just the beginning of our rainbow flock expansion, and we couldn't be more grateful to share it with our community.
If you want to follow along with this hatching adventure, keep an eye on our farm updates. We'll be posting regularly about the progress, the challenges, and the celebrations along the way.
And if you're already enjoying our pasture raised eggs, just wait. The best is yet to come.
