The Great Outdoor Migration: New Homes and Happy Hens

Post Categories

The sun is shining bright here at Faithful Flock Farm this morning, and the air smells like fresh grass and new beginnings. It is a beautiful Monday, the 27th of April, and there is a certain kind of magic in the air that only comes with springtime on a farm. I am sitting here on the porch for just a moment with a cold fruit smoothie in my hand, watching Milo, our little Maltese, and Panda Bear, our black and white Shih Tzu, chase each other through the dandelion patches. They know something big is happening today.

Today is the day of the great outdoor migration. For a farmer, there is nothing quite like the day the chicks finally get to put their little feet on the actual ground. It is a day of transition, a day of hard work, and a day of immense gratitude. We have been preparing for this move for weeks, and seeing it all come together feels like such a blessing from the Lord.

A Gift of Community: John’s New Coop

One of the most heart-warming parts of today is finally getting to use the new coop. This beautiful structure was donated to us by our dear friends, John and Shannon. We have officially dubbed it "John’s Coop," and it is going to be the perfect sanctuary for our growing flock.

Community is the backbone of everything we do here. When John and Shannon reached out with this donation, it reminded me of how God provides for us through the kindness of our neighbors. This coop is sturdy, elevated, and designed with so much care. It provides the security our birds need while giving them a front-row seat to the beautiful pasture life.

Seeing the coop sitting out there in the green field makes my heart swell. It represents more than just wood and wire; it represents a shared vision of local, ethical farming and the support that keeps a small family farm like ours going. We are so incredibly thankful for friends who see the value in what we are building here at Faithful Flock Farm.

The "House of Joy" Drama

If you have been following our journey, you know about the "House of Joy" chicks. They earned that name because of the sheer energy and light they bring to the barn. Yesterday, the girls from the House of Joy were the first ones to make their move outside. They spent the whole day scratching in the dirt and exploring every nook and cranny of their new environment.

However, chicks can be a little bit like toddlers. Today, when they realized that they weren't the only ones getting attention, they were not happy. They watched from their enclosure as we prepared the other coops, and let me tell you, they tried their absolute best to escape! They were fluttering against the wire and chirping at the top of their lungs, clearly demanding to be let out into the main pasture again.

It is funny how much personality these little birds have. They have a real zest for life, and while they might be a little grumpy today that they have to share the spotlight, I know they are just excited to be part of the action. Their antics kept us laughing all morning, even as we were hauling feed and water across the yard.

Mercy’s Move and Mimi’s Success

Today is also a big day for Mercy’s coop. We are moving them out as we speak. Moving a whole coop is a slow and steady process. We want to make sure everyone is calm and that the transition is as stress-free as possible. It takes patience and a gentle hand, but seeing them settle into the grass for the first time makes every bit of effort worth it.

Meanwhile, over at Mimi’s coop, things are going wonderfully. The boys and girls there are absolutely loving the extra space. We recently added some extra fencing to give them more room to roam, and you can see the difference in their behavior immediately. They are calmer, they are foraging more actively, and they just seem content.

There is something so peaceful about watching a happy flock. When they have the space they need to be the creatures God designed them to be, they flourish. It reminds me of how we all need a little extra space and fresh air to feel our best, too. You can see some of our happy residents in our photo gallery if you want to see their beautiful feathers up close.

A Season of Healing for the Mamas

Perhaps the most important part of today's migration is what it means for our older hens, the Mamas. For a while now, they have been dealing with the constant attention of the roosters. While roosters are an important part of farm life, they can be a bit rough on the ladies.

Today, the Mamas are finally free from the roosters. We have given them their own dedicated space where they can simply "be." This is their time to heal, to regrow any lost feathers, and to just enjoy the quiet of the pasture without being chased around.

Stewardship means looking after the well-being of every single animal on this farm, even when they aren't in their peak laying years. These Mamas have given us so much, and it is our responsibility to ensure they have a peaceful environment to recover. I spent some time talking to them this morning, and I could swear they looked more relaxed already. They are getting the "spa treatment" of fresh greens and quiet corners, and they certainly deserve it.

Why This Matters to Us

You might wonder why we spend so much time moving coops and worrying about which chick is "grumpy" or which hen needs a break. To us, this isn't just a business or a way to get fresh eggs. It is a calling.

When you choose to support local food and local farms, you are supporting a system that values life, health, and the land. Our goal is to provide the healthiest, most ethical food possible for our local families. By giving our birds fresh air, sunshine, and room to grow, we are ensuring that the eggs you put on your breakfast table are filled with the goodness of nature.

Every step we take, from the brooder to the pasture, is done with a prayer in our hearts. We believe that by being good stewards of what we have been given, we are honoring the Creator. Whether it is Milo and Panda Bear keeping watch over the yard or Mama out there moving fences, it is all part of a larger story of faith and family.

We are so excited for the weeks ahead. As the weather warms up, we have so many plans for the farm. I told Sonny that as I move more of the girls out, I will be sure to snap a few more pictures of them enjoying the sunshine. There is nothing quite as photogenic as a hen discovering a fresh patch of clover for the first time!
