Biting the Hand That Feeds: Serama Sass and the Daily Grind

Post Categories

The June sun is finally finding its rhythm here at Faithful Flock Farm.
These early summer mornings are some of our favorites.

There is a certain peace in the morning air before the heat sets in. It is a quiet time to reflect on the work ahead. We find ourselves looking over the pastures and feeling a deep sense of gratitude.

Running a farm while managing several other businesses is quite the balancing act. It takes a lot of time, a lot of physical labor, and a heart full of patience. Some days the to-do list feels longer than the driveway.

But then, something happens that makes us laugh and reminds us why we chose this life. Today, that "something" involved our tiny, spunky Serama roosters. These little guys have more personality in one feather than most birds have in their whole bodies.

The Big Milestone and the Little Nips

We had a very exciting moment this morning. One of our Serama roosters finally found his crow! It is a small, triumphant sound that fits his stature perfectly. He sounded so proud of himself as he announced his presence to the rest of the flock.

However, that newfound confidence seems to have gone straight to his head. Both of our Serama roosters have decided that biting is their new favorite hobby. It is quite ironic, really.

They have taken a particular liking to biting at Mama’s toes whenever she is out in the coop. They even try to nip at her hands while she is setting down their food. We have to laugh because they truly are "biting the hand that feeds them."

Don't they know that those are the hands that bring the treats?
They don't seem to care one bit. To them, it is all just part of being a big, tough rooster in a tiny, feathered body.

The Reality of the Daily Grind

Watching the Seramas be so "sassy" got us thinking about the nature of our work. Running a farm is rarely about the flashy moments you see in magazines. It is about the daily grind and the steady, quiet trust in the process.

It is about checking on the livestock several times a day, even when we are tired. Especially now that it is hot, making sure they have cool, fresh water is an absolute necessity for their wellbeing. It is about providing fresh bedding and ensuring everyone is healthy and safe. We do this work because we feel a calling to be good stewards of what we have been given.

Managing multiple businesses means our hands are always full. Some days, the work itself feels like it is "biting" back. There are mechanical failures, unexpected weather shifts, and the general exhaustion that comes with small business ownership, but we keep going with gratitude for the work set before us.

Yet, we find joy in the process anyway. We choose to see the humor in a tiny rooster nipping at our toes. We choose to find the beauty in the routine of gathering farm fresh eggs every single afternoon.

Stewardship Over Success

Our approach to farming has always been about stewardship over flashy marketing. We are not a factory operation, and we never want to be. We are a family farm built on obedience to God’s calling.

That obedience means showing up for the flock, even when they aren't being particularly grateful. Those Serama roosters might not understand where their meals come from, but we do. We understand that our role is to care for them with patience and love.

This same care goes into every single one of our pasture raised eggs. Whether you prefer the brown, white, or our special green varieties, you are getting the result of daily, hands-on care. Every egg represents a quiet trust and a lot of hard work.

We believe that people can taste the difference when animals are raised with kindness.
Our hens are tended with patience, and they spend their days in conditions that prioritize their wellbeing. That is the standard we hold ourselves to, day in and day out.

Finding Joy in the Little Things

It is easy to get caught up in the stress of a busy schedule. When you are running several businesses, the weight of responsibility can feel heavy. That is why these moments with the animals are so important to us.

Milo and Panda Bear are usually right there with us, keeping an eye on the "sass" from the roosters. Milo and Panda Bear are the best farm companions we could ask for. They remind us to stay present and find the fun in the day.

If the Seramas want to act like they run the place, we let them have their moment. We will keep providing the food, the water, and the fresh bedding. We will keep showing up, because consistency is at the heart of everything we do.

We are so thankful for the community that supports our small farm. Knowing that our eggs end up on the tables of local families makes all the work worth it. Even the nipped toes and the long hours.
