The 8:00 AM Roll Call: Cookies, Chores, and Quiet Faithfulness

Post Categories

It was one of those slower Saturday mornings here, the kind that feels like a small gift. The roosters let us sleep until 8:00 AM, which is about as late as farm life ever lets us go, and that alone felt memorable.

As soon as we stepped out, Milo and Panda Bear were ready to tag along. They know the rhythm of the morning by now. A little attention first, then the walk out to check everybody, count heads, and make sure all was well.

The Morning Started Slow, Then Picked Up Fast

We had family on our minds because it was John's birthday, and we were hoping to put together a turkey dinner for him. We had gone looking for turkey at the store and started wondering if it was one of those things you only find easily in November. Then, as it turned out, there was one waiting in our own freezer all along.

That changed the plan quickly, and thankfully for the better. What started as a bit of a hunt turned into a surprise Turkey Hotshot dinner, which felt just right for the day.

And yes, there was Carrot Cake too. It made the meal feel even more special, simple and homemade in the best kind of way.

Family Brought the Extra Fun

John and Shannon added even more to the celebration when they brought a Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake. It came with the little "deuces" joke, which gave us all something to laugh about, and they also showed up with a giant bag of Rural King popcorn.

Those are the kinds of details that stick with you. A good meal is a blessing, but so are the small, funny parts of the day that make it feel personal.

The Evening Chores Were Their Own Story

By chore time, farm life was still moving right along. Road Runner made sure we knew we were running late, and he had plenty to say about it. In his mind, even 8:00 AM is probably far too late for decent people to be getting started.

Then there was Flighty, our Leghorn and Australorp rooster mix, who decided to add a little drama. He flew into the Brahma run with King, then managed to squeeze himself right through the fence, which meant we had to stop and deal with that before finishing up.

We also realized the light in the coop had come unplugged, likely from mowing, so that needed fixed. And before we wrapped up, we marked a brown egg with two "X's" for the broody hen, one more little task in a day full of them.

Quiet Faithfulness in the Middle of a Full Day

Even with the extra movement, the day still carried that steady farm rhythm. We checked on the flock, handled what needed handled, and kept moving one task at a time.

That is often how life here goes. Some moments are ordinary, some are a little unexpected, and some turn into stories we will tell again later. Through all of it, we are grateful for the work, the people around us, and the grace to keep showing up.

We are so grateful for the families who support our small farm. Whether you’ve been with us since the beginning or you’re just finding us now, we want you to know that your support allows us to continue this mission of stewardship.
