New Life on the Farm: Our First Hatch of the Season

Post Categories

There's a special kind of quiet that settles over the farm this time of year. The days are still short, the mornings are crisp, and everything feels like it's holding its breath. Waiting.

And then it happens. That first tiny crack in an eggshell. That first soft peep from inside.

New life is arriving at Faithful Flock Farm, and we couldn't be more grateful to share this season with you.

The Waiting Game Begins

If you've ever tried hatching chicks, you know that patience isn't just a virtue: it's a requirement. About 21 days before those first chirps fill the air, we carefully select eggs and settle them into the incubator.

Not every egg makes the cut. We look for eggs that are the right size, have strong shells, and come from our healthiest, happiest hens. It's a process we take seriously because we believe every life deserves the best possible start.

Once the eggs are nestled in, the real waiting begins. We check the temperature and humidity multiple times a day. We turn the eggs gently to make sure each little embryo develops properly. And we pray over them, trusting that God will do what only He can do.

What Happens Inside the Egg

It's easy to forget that something miraculous is happening inside those quiet shells. But if you could peek inside, you'd see a tiny heart beating by day three. By day ten, there are feathers starting to form. By day eighteen, the chick is getting ready to pip: to make that first crack in the shell.

We find ourselves checking the incubator more often as hatch day approaches. Is that a wobble? Did we hear something? The anticipation builds, and honestly, it never gets old.

There's something deeply humbling about watching new life unfold. We provide the warmth, the care, and the right conditions. But the miracle itself? That's not something we can take credit for.

The First Chirps

And then, one morning, we hear it. A tiny chirp. Then another.

If you've never experienced a hatch day, it's hard to describe the joy that fills the room. Those wet, wobbly chicks push their way out of their shells with determination we could all learn from. They rest. They fluff up. And before long, they're stumbling around the incubator like they own the place.

We always take a moment to just watch. To be still and grateful. These little lives are a gift, and we don't take that lightly.

From Incubator to Brooder

Once the chicks have dried off and found their footing, it's time to move them to the brooder. This is their home for the next several weeks: a warm, safe space where they can eat, drink, and grow stronger every day.

We use a heat lamp to keep the temperature just right, starting around 95 degrees and lowering it a few degrees each week. Fresh water and chick starter feed are always available. And we spend a lot of time just sitting with them, letting them get used to our voices and our presence.

These early days matter. The care we give now shapes the chickens they'll become. Calm, healthy, well-socialized birds don't happen by accident. They happen because someone took the time to be present.

Why We Love Hatching Season

Hatching chicks is a lot of work. There are late nights checking temperatures, early mornings cleaning brooders, and the occasional heartbreak when an egg doesn't make it. But we wouldn't trade it for anything.

This is what farming is all about for us. It's not just about producing farm fresh eggs or raising animals. It's about participating in something bigger than ourselves. It's about stewardship and wonder and gratitude.

Every chick that hatches reminds us why we started Faithful Flock Farm in the first place. We wanted to raise animals with care, to provide wholesome food for our community, and to honor God through the work of our hands.

Thinking About Starting Your Own Flock?

If you've been dreaming about backyard chickens, now is the perfect time to start planning. Spring is just around the corner, and there's no better season to welcome new chicks into your life.

Here are a few things to think about as you prepare:

Do your research. Different breeds have different personalities, egg colors, and care needs. Some are better for beginners than others. Take your time finding the right fit for your family.

Prepare your space. Before your chicks arrive, make sure you have a brooder set up with a heat source, bedding, food, and water. They'll need a warm, draft-free environment for those first few weeks.

Buy from someone you trust. When you're looking for hatching chicks, it matters where they come from. Healthy parent stock, proper incubation, and careful handling make all the difference.

Be patient with yourself. There's a learning curve to raising chickens. You'll make mistakes. We all do. But you'll also learn, and your flock will thrive because of your dedication.

We're always happy to answer questions if you're just getting started. Feel free to reach out to us: we love connecting with fellow chicken enthusiasts.

What's Next at Faithful Flock Farm

This first hatch of the season is just the beginning. We have more eggs in the incubator and more hatches planned throughout the winter and spring. We're expecting some beautiful varieties, and we can't wait to see what colors show up in our egg baskets later this year.

We're also excited to share that Amy has a book coming out in February called "When God Plants a Farm." It's the story of how Faithful Flock Farm came to be and the faith journey behind it all. We'll have more details soon, so stay tuned.

If you'd like to follow along with our hatching season and other farm updates, be sure to check our Farm Update page regularly. We love sharing the everyday moments: the messy, the miraculous, and everything in between.
